Homework Annoucement: Turn Off Your Television on Saturday

I had to read this twice, a television cable network saying turn off your televisions for 3 hours. Are you kidding me? I work 5 days a week and Saturday is SpongeBob Time. Why would someone say this? Nickelodeon cable network has announced that television screens will go blank on Saturday and they are advising its viewers not to fiddle with the buttons — but to go outside and play. Funny, I just had this conversation with my child just this last weekend. He asked me what did I play with as a kid. I named a few things (pre-historic Barbie was one), but quickly realized, that I played outside most of the time. Oh yes, the smell of fresh air and instead of holding a remote you picked up a stick or a ball to play with. How times have changed.

Why is Nick doing this? The three hours of dead air the children's network will begin broadcasting at noon (EDT/PDT) is part of its fourth annual worldwide day of play, an encouragement to kids to get outside and work on getting in shape.

Later that day, any kids who have gotten the exercise bug might tune into the network's "Let's Just Play Go Healthy Challenge" (6 p.m. EDT/PDT) and compare what they did with other kids whose exercise regimens have been spotlighted on the show.

So fess up folks. I know some of you still sit and watch the morning cartoons. When the television goes off Saturday, head outside and do something you haven't done in a while.... go play. Race you to the swings. :)

I think it's a good idea to shut off the television to make kids go outside and play without them thinking that there is something on TV that they could watch and/or miss if they went and played outside.

Billy, why do you keep commenting everything? You don't need extra credit. Anyways, shutting off the t.v.'s is a great idea because they are a waste to society.

I think what Nick is doing is wonderful. This company obviously is in the market to convince customers to watch their shows and sell us products, however with this promotion, they are showing recognition of the importance of play and exercise for children.
PS. Billy I appreciate your making comments and participation on the blog. This Blog is about learning more about things in the news that relate to Economics. By reading and commenting on each topic you are going to grow as a student and learner. Extra credit or not. :) Keep typing.

Wow... This was really interesting. More kids do need to get out more and participate in activies besides watching t.v. I think this would actually work. Now if they could only control video games for three hours too.

I think that Nick is doing a remarkable thing. They had the confidence to shut off their network for a few hours to try and convince kids to go outside, play, and use their imaginations :] Childhood obesity is taking over America and Nick is trying to do something about it and encourage children to go outside and pretend that they are cowboys and have just encountered a deserted town with many secrets.

i thinks nick is doing a great thing getting kids to go outside. do i think it will work. no. it isnt the only television channel out there. but it is proving a point. kids in our country are to lazy. why would a tv channel turn off themselves; the main profit making part of their business? i think parents should be getting their kids outside on their own. nobody should need a tv to tell them what to do. but at least now people might get the exercise they need.

well, at least for once a day.

Nick had a good idea, in theory at least. And like someone above me said, parents should make their kids go outside and run around. They should also limit their TV time.. it is amazing how things change.
As for getting our butts up yesterday, I can name countless people who were at a band competition all day long.. Oh, and for the record, I don't watch Saturday morning cartoons.

Nick had an excellent idea!
The children in this country definatly need to get outside more. Not only that but the parents should get out there and encourage this behavior as well.
Nick is being brilliant about this This did the station good as well as its viewers.

shutting off the t.v is by far not a good idea i love t.v why make educational shows if your just gonna tell them a couple months later to turn off your t.v? I like watching cartoons occassionally on a saturday morning when I'm bored. Or during the summer I have a babysitting job watching my little cousins every moring 6 days a week and them not watching cartoons for three hours would be torture for me. :(

cut mullarchy. taking saturday a.m. cartoons away would be a crime against humanity. what else are we suppose with are saturday besides sit in a bean bag chair, eat lucky charms, and watch scooby doo. tihs is an utter outrage and should not be allowed. i am tired of billy and tyler's shenanigans.

P.S. ninja turtles should be plated every day.

I think the idea of turning off the t.v. for a couple of hours is a good idea. It gives kids a chance to do something other than staying inside and watching t.v. all the time. It is also just one saturday i don think a couple of hours without spongebob will kill anyone.

I think that is a great idea, because just sitting in front of the tv is not helping them in anyway. And if they are in front of the tv they are most likely eating something and if you're doing both eating and watching you probably are not paying attention to if you're full. Which can create unhealthy kids. So I agree with the idea.

I agree with Tariq on this one (never thought I'd say that). This is a great thing that Nick is attempting to do. Will it work? For the most part probably not because kids do still have a remote. Some kids will still go out and play. Kids respond well to things they like, and one of their favorite T.V. stations encouraging them to bemore active could turn out to be somewhat effective. So, I applaud Nick for taking a risk and putting our children before their own possible benefits and even if the percentage of kids they reach with this idea is small it is still a move in the right direction.
