Even though I'm not fond of the fact that, people that play sports makes more money than people that actually are in the classroom/workplace, working their butts off, the guy deserves to be paid more than what athletes get now. I mean he's fighting with his life on the line, and to me thats worth more money that anyone could give me. so its kind of like he's getting underpaid. thats a'lot of money!

AClinard said...

I would have to agree with Patrick on this on. With the amount of danger in this man's sport, they pay was definitely worth(?) the risk. If he was willing to participate is this often-fatal sport, then more power to him, along with more money.

Another term on which I agree with Patrick is the difference in pay between athletes and those who actually work for the good of other people. Teachers, police, firefighters and other social workers are grossly underpaid. A fireman who saves ten lives a year will never make the same as a football player who SITS ON THE BENCH ten times a year....

McElligott4 said...

I too think it is unfair that hard working people get paid less then someone who works for just a couple months of a year.

asebastian5 said...

i think its not right to the people that actually try to make a living and work their butts off t get paid less than the peope that mostly sit around and get waited on hand andfoot cause their good at a sport. but on the other hand risking your life should come wit a higher pay beause you could lose everything with just one mishap...yet pople like firefighters risk their life on a dayly basis and still will always get paid less then pro athlete.

BScott5 said...

This article surprised me.....i mean his total earnings would have been estimated to be 15 BILLION dollars. I think still even that much money is not worth to put your life on the line. But who knows that much money....and back then just for the matter i probably would have been right next to him.

I think we should be paying all athletes like this, because what could be better than nascar with its own private militia, or the usta feeding all of africa for a year. Though it would probably make the dollar worth less

emarcum2 said...

athletes these days get paid an enormous amount of money. Like patrick said, its pretty crazy that they dont work as hard as the normal everyday man but get paid in the millions for just a single game or event.

JCallender2 said...

I have to agree with both Patrick and Andrew about how he deserved to be paid more than a regular athlete does. For most people, such as myself, there is no amount of money you could give me to risk my life. But the fact that athletes get paid more than normal hard working people is kind of a rip off, but its just the way things work I suppose.

i think that people who play sports should get paid a a lot less than they actually do. with that i think that a sport with great risks including death should be paid more than someone who plays tennis. i men he could die an i do think you can die playing tennis.

kmyers4 said...

I agree with the multiple people on here that say that it is unfair that an athlete gets paid a whole heck of a lot more than people who pay so much money to go to college and then end up getting a normal paying job while the athletes get a crapload of money for skipping college. Its crap. Maybe if they gave up some of their millions that they are never gonna spend, they could help fix the economy.

bgrizzle4 said...

I believe athletes do get paid too much compared to people that actually do really hard work. Some athletes should be paid more and some don't such as people that do risk their lives everyday doing what they do.

kmabry4 said...

It is amazing to me that this guys money compares to $15 billion today. I don't see how they would need that much money back then. Who even needs that much money now. It is wrong that athletes do get paid this much. It is just like Patrick said its not fair for people to get paid so much for only working part of the year

tscott4 said...

I do not think that an athlete should be paid as much as they are. Most athletes don't just get paid for entertaining people, but for other things like putting products out into the public. A lot of people work hard for their job, but don't get paid as much. It is unfair in the sense that hard workers are being paid less than those who didn't work as hard.

BaileyBrubaker said...

I think professional sports are pointless. Paying that much money so someone will run up and down a field holding a ball is a waste. People like doctors and teachers, people that make a difference in the world should get payed more than athletes.

scaudle4 said...

I think the amount of money paid to athletes is ridiculous. As like most of the comments, they don't do nearly as much as doctors, firefighters, policemen, ect. And as for the jobs athletes do, are not compared to the hours and risks that the jobs listed above have. I think the guy doing the chariot racing, he does deserve money for risking his life like that, but I still feel that people with jobs that SAVE others lives should be paid more.

Sarah Leighton said...

I don't think that sports players should be payed that much money vs. someone who has a degree. That in my opinion doesn't even match up. You go to school and get a degree which is worth thousands, and then you have someone who can run down a field? Just doesn't seem fair to me that sports players get that much money.

It is interesting to think that an athlete from a long gone civilization makes far more money than an athlete from today.

However, I think that athletes are among the most overpaid people in the world. A person who is a doctor, scientist, or engineer is of much more importance, and they work much harder than any athlete ever would.

Gaius Appuleius Diocles was the athelte was payed the most amount of money. He earned a sum of 35,863,120 sesterces (ancient Roman coins). He ended his carrer at the age of 42. It is doubted that even Tiger Woods could have matched the amount of money that Gaius earned during his life.

dbrown5 said...

It is very unfair that people that are playing sports make more money than people working in an office or restaurant. People playing sports and having fun making millions while the people working in factories 40 hours a day are pretty much miserable.

The most earnings made by an athlete is a Roman chariot racer. He earned 15 billion dollars in our money. He also had a 36 win streak in a row, and made 9 horses win 100 times. He also Made one horse win 200 times all together he won over 1/4 of all the races he was in. He did not win the most out of all the racers, but he earned the most. It was stated that in one event he won 145,000 roman dollars.

smobley5 said...

The amount of money that would have been estiamted in this chariot racers earnings in modern times which is in the billions is outrageous amount of money. Even tho he spared his life doing the sport, money isn't worth it and personally they shouldn't have been paying him money for him to potentially die from something for others entertainment, which brings me to say that money being given to people for entertainment in this country has become much more then the public services that we need to live with, which is outrageous and not fair. Lets throw a ball around and get payed billions.

alawwill5 said...

It's is amazing that one could make 15 billion dollars being a racer in Rome back in 146 A.D. Who would have ever thought that a sport of that sort would pay out such a large sum of money. It is common today for athletes to sign contracts worth millions of dollars, but I have to agree with Patrick. It is depressing for a hard working student to know that people who didn't even go to college or didn't graduate are able to go out in the world and make millions of dollars, while hard working students go out in the world searching long and hard for a job that will just get them on their feet. I feel that it is unfair and that athletes these days are over payed for what they do. I just wish that the common everyday hardworking American could make the more than someone who can throw a 100 mph fast ball.

Alex said...

I understand that athletes are paid to entertain the people, but for what they do, they get paid way too much. Working people such as garbage men and construction workers work extremely hard but don't get the best paychecks. I believe the harder the job, the more in demand, and important jobs should make the most. However the chariot racer, Gaius Appuleius, was not quite an athlete. Gailus was a slave forced to fight and race, while risking his life during it all. Therefore his "job" was worth way more than any monetary value.

TylerMcLaughlin5 said...

I feel that the athlete in this article completely earned every cent of his wealth, unlike most athletes today. His risked life and limb in every event he competed in still unlike most athletes today. I feel that athletes today shouldn't earn as much money as people who work very hard to get what they have.

Stevenator said...

Was surprised, never would have guess someone from way back in Rome was highest paid.
As for Sportsmen/women of today, they may seem to be getting big sums of cash for being big shot players, but then taxes kick in. The warrior of back then had a large sum of money, plus was fighting for his life. So he really was paid more, in more ways than just cash.

Aandrew5 said...

I really don't think this counts because the "sport" is more of a death match, than a competitive sport. The Roman government held huge events as which we don't see today, imagine the super bowl or the world cup and multiply it times 5. Every time a new emperor was elected, to earn the favor of the people he held huge events, and gave out huge prizes to the competitors. If we had those event in today's society, people would make this kind of money. Athletes today make a surprising amount of money, but if you look at what they do, what they get payed is not unreasonable. The average time a NFL lineman last is no more that 3 years in that time they might get payed millions, but that's might be all they make for life, with the injuries, and health problems.

joshBurns5 said...

i disagreed that athletes gets over paid. yes there having fun on the field but athletes have to train and work there entire life to get to where they are at.

showarth4 said...

The fact that a chariot racer made the most money of all athletes, really surprised me. I'm not sure how hard it is to race in a chariot race, but it can't be that easy of he got that much money to do it. Although I do think that is a lot of money to pay one man. I think athletes get paid too much compared to other professions, such as a teacher or a nurse. I kind of wonder what he could do with all of that money any way?

KCollins5 said...

It's crazy to think that the highest paid athlete in history was a chariot racer. But then again, it's crazy to think about how much an athlete gets in today's society. There are people working in factories and taking every spare minute they have to work and get not even a fourth of what an athlete gets in today's economy. To me, it's not fair at all.

aglobke5 said...

I think its cool that someone who was brave enough to put his life on the line more than 4,000 times and won almost 1,500 times did get all that money. He deserved it for being so courageous and being the best in his sport. Athletes work just as hard if not harder than people with normal jobs because they have to practice and keep getting better at what they do, only difference is what they do is glorified and can earn you a ton of money.

tmoore7 said...

the athletes who made the most money are obviously the achent rome ones. if Diocles’s total earnings of 35,863,120 sesterces were enough to provide grain for the entire population of Rome for one year then i would say that is a lot more monet any celeberty has in the US.

katy02 said...

this article is very much a powerful statement about how underpaid he really was because like patrick said he did fight for his life everytime he played so i would have to agree with patrick about him being underpaid.

I didn't kniw that someone could be paid so much money for one sport. It doesn't seem right to me, that he is getting paid so much money for nothing. that money could have went to poor familys in the city. They never even worked for the money they won. All they did was drive a chariot around and that is it. The money, the winner won, could have been used for so many other things.

bkueker5 said...

A chariot racer making the most money out of all athletic careers for entertainment could be fair. The fact that the middle class have to pull double shifts sometimes to keep the lights on in the house is something i have to say is completely pathetic. A single complete pass in fottball for a player can equal the the same or double what someone working in a factory makes per year. This is something that needs to be balanced out more between the working class and the celebrities.

NJohnson4 said...

Chariot racing was obviously considered a very dangerous sport back in those days. It could mean your life if you lose. If you win, you hit the jackpot. Most sports today, are not really dangerous. Athletes are payed ridiculous amounts of money to play a game, while firefighters, soldiers, and cops, etc are putting their life on the line every day and will never even come close to the total earnings of what a professional athlete makes.

Nic2 said...

I find this article really interesting that decades ago that elite athletes were being highly paid above the everyday citizen. It amazes me at the amount of money they paid athletes compared to today which seems a'lot when you hear on t.v. about athletes getting a 2o million yearly contract and that seems like a lot to us let alone a billion dollar contract.

Dani said...

I was kind of surprised that the chariot racer was the highest paid athlete, but it makes sense. He's out there risking life and limb, so he should get a fair amount of money. But it's still not right that any athlete gets paid more money than a working class citizen.

lhall2 said...

It realy caught me off guard that chariot racers made the most out of the athlethes. You'd think that a football player, or a golfer would be the highest paid, but it was actually the chariot racer whse total earnings would be estimated to about 15 billion dollars today.

I feel that this is unfair, as it shows how much athlethes, who are just there for pure entertainment, get paid more than people who actucally DO something. Such as eachers, who teach the children of America all the vital things they need to know, and fireman and such.

Tyler Michael Joseph O'Dell #2 :D said...

I'd say i have to agree with Andrew Globke. The fact that Athletes make more money than the average worker is very reasonable, because professional athletes work just as hard, but probably are just more likely to be having fun at what they do.

abowyer2 said...

I was very surprised to hear that this chariot racer made the most money out of all the athletes ever. It is very surprising and I didnt even realize that chariot racers were paid that much or even paid at all. I also agree with the various people who said that he deserved that pay not only because he was good but was racing for his life. I also agree with everyone that it is crazy how much athletes today get paid compared to other jobs. Even some of the highest office or other jobs don't even compare to what some athletes make. Don't get me wrong I feel that athletes should make good money but some of them make way way too much and also mostly just use it all on theirselves which I think is kind of wrong. I feel that some athletes could really be making a difference with their pay, and some are, but most of them don't which I think is a little selfish.

Evanpetten2 said...

I believe that with sports it a luck of the draw. Someone can either make millions doing what they love and something that is really dangerous. Or they can go to and pay for college, then get a job they may or may not like. Either way, its not right to the people who are stuck with "regular" jobs.

Anonymous said...

Although i do think that althletes do make an outrageous sum of money i think that they work just as hard as the "ordinary" person if not harder. Plus most athletes do not have a fall back plan incase they get injured (which occurs often) and most of the players only play for a few years. It's not like there are a ton of people who just decide to play sports, they have most likely played their whole life and have devoted all their spare time to try and get better. So, i feel that it's very hard to become good enough to play in professional leagues and make money and that if you are one of the few that are able to get there then you got there because you deserve it and worked very hard.

Some of the best, most important jobs on the planet don't compare to what some athletes make. I believe more athletes need to use their vast amount of money to better the world in some way.

The richest athlete in the world was a spanish charriot racer in Rome. He made the most money out of every athlete ever by doing high dollar races. He earned an equivalent of 15 billion dollars in U.S. money.

Anonymous said...

I think it is very fair that athletes get paid more. As an athlete myself I understand the committment and risk you are taking each day you step out on the field, tarck, or in the pool. These people are making a living at something they love and are good at. No matter what you do as a career you should love what you do. Just because they are doing something fun and exciting doesn't mean they work any less than a regular businessman. In fact I believe they work even harder because their jobs require more than the average job. Maybe they should even be paid more than they already are.

emaloney2 said...

I believe differently then what you guys are saying...In the way economy is today, there is different levels of society...Some people are born into money, while others have to work hard to earn it. If we get to choose, for the most part, the kind of profession we want to go into then why put down people that play sports professionally...it was their choice...why put down a teacher...they probably picked to do that job knowing the income they would make. The guy in the article choose to do the sportm, he deserves the money..

Anonymous said...

well, i am on the side of more to the man who risks his life. if any of you were to do something like this i bet you would want a large pay too. But to the point at hand, athletes are seriously over payed. If an athlete gets hurt and cant play, should he have more money for his family than if a man fighting for your freedom dies and leaves a wife and 2 kids behind? I personally believe not, but then i am biased so my argument isn't fully represented innocently. But im sure many of you out there will agree with me.

sminge4 said...

This article definitely baffled me. How crazy is it that a charioteer from way back when can make that much money?! It goes to show that athletes have always been payed excesive amounts of money. This didn't just start recently. I agree that its wrong for athletes to get paid millions of dollars, while your everyday, hard-working individual only gets a fraction of that.

At the same time, I believe that both athletes and everyday workers work very hard to succeed. Athletes put in many hours of practic, while the working individual goes to school and spends several hours at their work place. But the way I see it, as long as they're doing what they love, who cares how much they get paid?

tlahagu4 said...

I think it's crazy that people who actually work hard to make a living, barely can earn $60,000/yr. While lucky people that have opportunity and talent earn 100x that. But i guess risking your life is worth something.

JWooton1 said...

The fact that athletes get paid more than people that work regular jobs. Like those in an office or those loyal men and women the get up every morning and work honest jobs for a living.
Never really bothered me but i do agree it is unfair that people that work hard and honest get paid less than a bunch of guys that throw a ball. But a chariot racer such as Gaius Appuleius, him being a slave that had to race for his life. I do agree that his pay was indeed worth it.

DDix2 said...

I found it quite interesting that the highest paid athlete was a chariot racer. I dont think its fair that an athlete gets paid more for completing a pass or making a goal than someone who works their butt off in a factory to try to keep their families eating.

blake davis4 said...

it urks me the fact that someone who spends so much time and effort into something and gets paid less than someon who spends barely anytime to do something.
I feel that this should be changed and that the peoplethat keep doing there good deeds, it will pay off in the end for them.

jmccune2 said...

people in today's society worship athletes, they're paid the big bucks while people who work hard day in and day out are paid barley enough to makes ends meet.

i think with chariot riders, they were their times football players. they were the stars, and so they were payed like stars.

bbaker_2 said...

The amount of money that somebody wearing a shirt with a number and name on their back is rediculous. I would love to make that much money for playin a game. Monet talks and so do the mouths that make all that money. The way ESPN talks about these contracts it makes them seem like all this money grows on trees.....i guess it does. good day.

SuttonAbney12 said...

People who play sports professionally, do indeed, get paid a very large amount of money. People that are very smart also get paid lots of money. To me it is fair that athletes get paid that much money. Most people probably don't agree but, athletes work just as hard as the people busting their butts and getting good grades, they are just working hard at seperate things?

Knoble4th said...

I think it is kind of unfair that athletes who work months get paid more than people who work year around, but at the same time athletes arent only working those months. They also train year around and put their bodys through physical pain which i think they desevre the money.

SOsborne5 said...

I think its amazing someone so long ago made so much money. But it really does kind of suck that athlete's get paid way more than people who actually... work. But people worship them for whatever reasons... personally I could care less about professional athletes.
