Time for a raise? This Thursday, many will see an increase in pay to help off-set the higher costs of food and gas. Will this impact you directly? Do you think this is enough? What is the opinion of the article? What is your opinion?
I am strongly against the minimum wage increase. Because the companies do one of two things: They either raise product prices or stop hiring people.
I remember last summer, most fast-food restaurants had an application stack, and now almost none of them do. I believe that fast-food places are hiring less because they have to pay them more money. If they have to pay workers more, they will hire less of them.
You are NOT supposed to support a family on minimum wage, like the guy in that article. Minimum wage is for teens who need extra cash and people who need a part-time job. $5.85 would be no problem for me.
I do not think that they should raise minimum wage. All that this will do is raise the prices of goods/services even more. Also, it might prompt companies to hire less people, and make jobs harder to come across. I would rather make $5.85 and have the prices stay where they are than make $6.55 and have to pay more for things. Things will probably just get worse for consumers.
I agree with Caroline, I don't think that they should raise minimum wage either. All that it is going to do is raise the prices of everything else, and we will still be in the same position as before just with higher prices.
I think that they shouldn't raise minimum wage because that just raises the price of goods and services. It may even make it harder to get jobs. I'd rather get $5.85 than have the fear that I may not get a job because they don't hire people as easily.
I don't think anything is going to change by raising the minimum wage. It'll go up, but so will prices on everything else so people making minimum wage will still be in the same boat. Not being able to afford everything they need. It won't affect me too directly I don't think. I'm making more than minimum wage right now anyway so I won't be seeing any more money. I just don't see any hope in raising minimum wage. I think people just need to try to find better jobs, as difficult as it may be.
Hmmm. Well, I agree with every single person here. Raising the minimum wage won't do much at all. Gas prices are going to continue to soar, along with food and merchandise. While the minimum wage keeps going up, the prices of items keep going up also, which leaves that person with no profit at all. I'm sure many people can relate to this article. A lot of families are scarce on cash and don't have enough money for bills or necessities, let alone things they want. It's a shame.
I dont think that they should raise the prices of minimum wage, I mean its just gonna make everything else that we really need higher, it will be harder to get jobs and gas will go up even more. I believe our country is just trying to do much, we need to start worrying on the more important things and not something that really matters as MUCH.
I like the idea of wage increase since I already get paid less than minimum wage due to tips. But there is no point because the prices will increase and when they do people will get tight with there money and not leave tips (they aren't required). So basically everything pans out back to it's original self.
Although it is sort of a good thing to have higher pay, it really doesn't do much good with the prices of just about everything soaring these days. Walter Jasper may earn 70 more cents an hour now, but he's also paying more to ride the bus. 70 more cents doesn't really go that far. Sure, you can maybe afford to get a little more food at the grocery but, that's about it.
Obviously, alot of people are going to be effected, whether it be in a positive or negative way. Less people are hiring, more people are being laid-off or fired, but then on the other hand, people are getting a little bit more on a paycheck. Like Charles said before, you are definately NOT supposed to raise and support a family on a minimum wage salary.
I disagree with the minimum wage increase. Yeah you get little bit more in your pay check, but it also means you have to pay more for everything else and prices for everything else are rising much faster than just once a year.
I too am against the minimum wage increase. Basically the only people it will be good for are teens who have families that pay for their groceries and other goods, and need some extra cash for whatever they want. For the rest of the U.S., the minimum wage increase will mean a raise on other consumer goods and a decrease on job availability.
The minimum wage hike won't impact me directly, but I believe that it might help somewhat. However, minimum wage is not made to support a family. Mostly I believe it is for teenagers or college students. Not parents trying to make ends meet. I realize that the government is trying to help everyone, even high school drop-outs.
The opinion in the article is kind of neutral or mixed about the raise. It says the good and bad.
I think, also, that businesses such as fast food or dollar stores will try not to hire more people because of the prices. Some companies might raise their products prices. So all in all, it may or not may be enough, it really depends on the situation of the person and the opinion a company has.
I disagree with the wage increase along with everyone else. If they raise that, then they are just going to raise prices on everything else. So really, they're won't be much of a difference. And the guy in the article maybe should consider not having anymore children since he only makes minimum wage at his job at the carwash!
Since raising minimum wage will make other goods and services rise as well, it is not a very good idea. If people are making more money only to have to spend more, it will be equal in the end. Employers will be strict on how many more employees they can afford to pay. Supporting a family on minimum wage will never be an easy task regardless of an increase.
Raising the minimum wage means that they are paying people more so they can spend more. There is no point to get the minimum wage higher when prices are going to get higher as well. Plus, that means lowering the amount of workers which is worse in the big picture. In the end the economy can end up getting worse.
I am against raising the minimum wage just as everyone else is due to if our pay amount is raised prices of everything else is going to be raised as well. I agree with Charles about the who families shouldnt be riding on a minimum wage job and that they are more for teenagers who are trying to "become adults".
The minimum wage increase is going to eventually hurt everyone. First of all, it isn't helping the laborers who make just above minimum wage. My mom makes more than minimum wage, however, I agree with her when she says that everybody should get a raise with the minimum wage increase. The prices of consumer products is going to rise and EVERYBODY will need the extra money for it.Most people are barely making it through bills. mortgages, and gas prices, if that. The government shouln't have a say in how companies handle their money. I don't think a mixed economy is working out for us so great.
They can raise minimum wage all they want, it doesn't affect me. But there are some families out there who cannot take another hike in goods and services. Therefore in my opinion, minimum wage should stay the same for the sake of the people trying to make it on their last dollar bill. It's not a positive change.
I cannot see why people would want to increase minimum wage. Sure you could make a few extra pennies but is it really worth putting someone else out of a job altogether? If the minimum wage increases then there will be less jobs available to others and the price on goods will go up.
I agree with Charles on the fact that you are not supposed to support a family on minimum wage. If minimum wage increases, then the family members working on minimum wage will have to face even more problems when the price of products rise. Its better to just keep the wage as it is instead of paying more for products or making it difficult to find a job.
I think the raise is a good idea. American's need more money in their pockets to help stimulate the economy. Everyone is saying that it will cause prices to go up, but prices have been going up for a while now and they would have continued with or without a pay increase. This will only help us in the long run.
Sometimes you HAVE to support a family on minimum wage. The cost of college is more expensive than ever. And you would have to go to college for at least 4 years to get a degree to get a good job. i make 7.50 right now and thats after a raise twice over two years. Do i think that they should raise minimum wage probably not. because just like everyone has aid it will just cause the cost of everything else to go up, so then people will just have to find different ways to make ends meet. But do i think the man in the article with a family who rides the bus everyday to get to work and support his family is just sitting back watiting for minimum wage to go up, wrong. at least he is trying.
I think that since we have had a lot of problems and been hoping to fix them, that they shouldn't raise minimum wage because that would just make it worse.
For one I feel to many people are being influenced by this article. The writers are going to look for people and places to support their evidence so you might as well throw these things out. Second, prices will go up either way: pay increase or no pay increase. That is just the way our nation and the economy work. You have to buy it so why not charger more. Gas will go back down when winter starts to about 3 dollars and be higher in the summer. And McDonalds still has dollar McChichens, Burger King still has dollar hamburgers, and Wendys still has dollar crispy chicken sandwiches. Sometimes you have to scrap but if you stay with a plan this will for sure help.
I feel that raising the minimum wage will do nothing for anyone. The price of goods and services will go up at the same rate as the raises do. The price of food rose more than 5 percent at the time this post was made. So, by raising the minimum wage, all it is doing is encourage business's to make more money by raising the price of their goods.
Minimum wage has always been an issue in the United States and always will be. It is the fact of how gas prices and other good are rising that is making this minimum wage problem an even bigger problem.
personally, i would love a raise at my minimum wage job. but just thinking about the money i would get is selfish. raising minimum would help out us teens who are looking for some extra cash, but will eventually damage the economy as a whole. raising minimum wage will just make prices higher, and then, we'd just want minimum wage to be even higher. its a vicious cycle. leave minimum wage where it is. and stop raising prices.

I think rasing the minimum wage is a bad idea. It will just raise other things and make more problems on us. We still will be in the same place we started at.
In the end, if you raise minimum wage..the cost of all other things will go up..so even if you think your getting more you basically arent. Also th is will cause the Employer to higher less people which makes it even harder to find a decent job.
Increaseing minimum wage is never a good idea. It is usually a bad sign and only leads to the increase of goods and unemployment. We really should try to figure other ways to help ourselve other than increasing minimum wage.
I am against the minimum wage increase because make everything worth more. It won't really help us. Plus they have to lower the number of workers, which is worse.
