Pay For Grades

Incentives matter they say. Do you support this?

How would you like to be paid cash to read a book, to come to school, or get good grades on tests or in classes? Read this article to see what some are suggesting.

I like this idea. Everyone I knew growing up always got paid money for the grades they received on mid-terms and final grades except me. They got money depending on what they got like $15 for each A, $10 for each B, etc. I wish I would've got paid like that because having close to all A's during each grade report would've given me close to $60. I wish my parents would've done this and I would've definitely put in the extra effort just to make the grades.

I was never rewarded for my hard work growing up either. I got the good grades, but i don't think paying kids to do what they're suppose to do is right. Yes, the money may provide a good incentive for the kids to work harder, but what happened to the idea of 'self-discipline'. Plus, what happens later in life when these kids don't have the same incentives, will their work ethic be the same?

I love this idea! People always say that school is a kids job anyways why can't we get paid to "go to work"? So many people do get paid for good grades and I know that I do not. I think that if I did though I would put in that extra 20 minutes of studying before bed and stuff. People that don't have a lot of money anyways I think would try harder in school. Some things like the number of kids skipping school and teen crime rate might even go down. Money is an incentive that definatly gets people moving and working hard. Why would I skip school when I could get $5 for reading that chapter in Econ?

I was also one of the kids that never got paid for earning good grades. I always had all A's and I just felt good about myself. I didnt need the money to tempt me to receive good grades. I dont think that kids should be paid to do what they are expected to do. Cash would provide an incentive to make kids want to achieve but i agree with the idea of self discipline.

Schyler,
Your checks in the mail for reading the chapter. :) You mean you didn't get it yet???? And all this time I thought just being in my class and hearing me tell each of you good morning was enough. :)

I think it is a good idea for parents to give a reward for getting good grades. I never got this privledge but i think it would definitly encourage kids to get good grades. it does have to be money either. Any incentive would be a good idea.

i was the kid that got tricked into doing his work for money. by the way my parent have yet to pay up. anyway, it is definitely an encouragement, but it isnt necessary to succeed. i feel terrible if i dont do my very best at something. its weird to not have work done for school after being in the habit of doing it as a child. so in a way, for me, the bribery worked. i do my work, not for incentives, but for self-satisfaction.

More things would be done if there were more incentives. This is a good idea because maybe if students were to be paid for the grades they receive, maybe they would work harder to get the better grades.

I think this is a good idea, even though I don't get paid for my grades. My parents just expect the best from me. A few people I know do get paid for their grades though. This is good, but then again it's a reward for something you should be doing anyways, which is getting good grades and doing the best you possibly can. You should want to succeed and get a higher level of education. Getting money is just a bribe to do well basically. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm just saying you should want to get good grades without money in mind.

This is a good idea because if students were to receive money as an incentive for their grades maybe it would make them work harder for the better grades.

I agree with Jordan Cambell. I also have just gotten good grades because that is what is expected of me. I do it because it makes me feel good about myslef and it makes my parents proud of me. Yes i agree that it is a good incentive but kids should do it just because they want to.

I used to get paid by my parents to keep my grades good for the whole year long, but once I got to high school the getting paid thing stopped and I just stopped caring because I wasn't getting rewarded.

I never was rewarded for my grades. Many of my friends were given incentives for their grades except for me. I like the idea of incentive. I actually did know a person who was helped in school by a cash incentive and when the incentive started his GPA raised an entire point. from 2 to 3. I wish my parents would have rewarded me but they didnt. they just expected it.

I don't like the idea, I think the incentive for good grades is a good college and a good job when you're an adult. It's ok for parents to give the kid some money maybe at the end of the year if the kid did okay in school, but the kid's only goal shouldn't be to get easy money for video games or something stupid. Kids need self discipline.

First of all, how much is a grade worth? Could parents possible afford to pay, even at minimum wage, what the work is worth? Who benefits the most from the good grades, parents or student? Why not pay the parents to tutor so we can get more out of school for ourselves. Just something that seems selfish about that as well. Money is never a long term motivator. Job satisfaction, inner peace, joy of working with others, self improvement, to name a few, motivate me more than money. Marv

When i was younger i did have incentives for getting good grades. but now, i don't do it for the incentives, i do it for myself. I know that getting good grades will make me better off later on in life. If i didnt have incentives as a child, i don't think that my grades would be the same. Having incentives for grades as a child helped me understand that you have to work hard to get what you want, but it pays off in the end. But i totally agree with Philip on the work ethics. If you are always having incentives for things such as grades, where would your self-discipline come from?

I wish I got paid for my good grades it would have been cool. Friends of mine got paid for their grades but not me. Now if i got paid for my perfect attendance I would be pretty rich as I have has 12 years of perfect attendance and im working on year 13.

I do not like this idea. I think there is no reason a child should be paid to read, learn, or anything of the sort. My grandparents give me five dollars for every A I recieve on a report card, but this situation is different. They do this to make sure I know I am being praised for my good grades. Reading a book is good, but shouldn't you just do that anyways.

I think this idaea is a good thing because it will better their education and give the kids money. I think this will make kids want to do more stuff with work at school, because all they got to do is do work and get easy work. If I was a student at the school I would surely do the work to get a good grade and to get the easy money that was being made.

I think this is a good idea but it will never happen. If it ever happened i would be extra motivated.

i think that being paid to do what you should already be doing is wrong. i think that if you pay a student to just read and learn just to pass a test, will not help them learn. they may feel that if they just pass then it will be ok, but if they actually do the work to know throughout school, then they will do better inlife.

I think that getting paid for your grades is a good idea for some people. Some students need that extra push to help them along. Other people just like succeeding and accomplishing things on their own. I guess it is up to the person.
