Healthier Junk Food. Have You Switched?
You never know this could be the next Jeopardy Winning Question. Who Is the World's Largest Snack Food Producer? Answer.......Frito Lay. $10 Billion worth of sells each year to be exact. So, why would a company like that worry about coming up with something healthy? Health and Junk Food combined? Is there such a thing. Oh come on some of you are saying. Why worry, obvisouly, the fat is selling. Home of Doritos, Fritos, Cheetos and Tostitos, Frito-Lay represents 36 percent of parent company PepsiCo's operating profits. It is vital for a company to continue changing. When you are on top there is only one place to go.....down if you are not careful. Frito Lay has no choice, they to have to show they care about the customers, like so many other companies are trying to do. McDonald's has become the nation's biggest buyer of apples (which it serves with a side of sugary caramel sauce). Coca-Cola recently launched Diet Coke Plus, fortified with vitamins. After several years and 28 recipes, all 4,500 Dunkin' Donuts stores will be using zero-gram trans-fat oil to make the doughnuts.
Flat Earth, a new line of chips from Frito Lay, is hardly health food.
But for adults trying to buy healthier items for their kids..... this is it. Flat Earth veggie and fruit crisps are a step in the right direction.
They're baked, not fried, and have a potato base. A 130-calorie serving provides half a serving of a fruit or vegetable. Plus, they pass the taste test.
The flavors most popular in our informal tasting were Tangy Tomato Ranch, Garlic & Herb Field, and Peach Mango Paradise (although dried mangos are the second-to-last ingredient). The three other flavors are Wild Berry, Apple Cinnamon Grove and Farmland Cheddar.

its true people want to eat healthier. companies like frito-lay want to make money. they are losing their ground to other snack foods, ones that are healthier. they took their first step a while ago when they made baked chips. what is their next move.
although many like having healthy snack, most people will eat whatever you give them. frito-lay still has many consumers willing to buy their unhealthy foods. it is a good idea to serve more healthy foods, and great that companies are starting to care about their consumers. i praise frito-lay in this way.
Congratulations on copying every other company in the whole world you morons. it took you long enough to figure out that people don't want to be fat anymore.
Tariq
i argree with the fact that tariq COMPLETELY. although people continue to buy fattening food, the option of healthier snacks is becoming more popular. society has realized all the negative affects of the "fattening foods".
i think it's great for frito-lay to be thinking of a broader audience for their foods. most people in America will not completely give up unhealthy snack foods, so the products they make will always sell. however frito-lay did catch on to the fact that in order to stay at the top they can not count on the unhealthy eaters to make their profits large enough to stay on top. although i wish i could say that frito-lay started producing healthier foods in the best interest of their consumers i'm sure that this production is a desperate attempt to stay number one. but hey at least their strive to be the best is benefiting us by producing great tasting healthy foods!
I totally agree with sam and tariq. These companies are finally relizing that people want some healthy options too. Yeah some people still but fattening foods but at least they have the option of healthy stuff.
I'll give Frito-Lay a hand for trying to get people moving in a more healthy direction. I agree that it's a good idea. However, I have to ask, if people really want to be healthy than why not lay off the junk food altogether? It's called real fruit and vegatables and it's not a new concept. You can't have your cake and eat it too, and expect to be thin anyway.
i think its a good idea. it shows that they care about americans health and that they are trying to improve. people need to eat better so maybe they will if frito-lay makes it.
