Summer Article 7: Toughest Summer Job This Year Is Finding One

We just recently had our graduation ceremony for MHS; one of the things probably not said, was that they are stepping out into the worst job market in 50 years. The current economic problems are not just effecting your parents, they are directly impacting teenagers. Read this article and see how great the impact is. Are you working? Did you have problems finding a job?

I am working as a waitress at Frisch's. I found it extremely hard to get a job but I think it was because I just recently turned 16. Even though alot of places hire at 15 1/2, they'd prefer to hire someone older with more work experience.

Yeah, I tried to find a fast food job aroudn here, but there were few to no places that were hiring, and the majority of those hiring were for the night shift. I guess with the economy slowing, less people are eating out, thus less jobs.

I ended up getting a job doing yardwork for my neighbor. I would rather work in fast food, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

But we have been declining in jobs for about 30 years. I think less teens want to work these days. My grandpa made my all 6 of his kids get summer jobs. So the decline may also be because of a lower desire to work.

Im am currently employeed by Little Caesars in Middletown. I did not find it hard at all to get that job. When they were still constructing it, I went and filled out an application and was accepted a week later. It was still a month before it even opened. I was shocked to learn that I was hired that quick.

Its now five months later and I really hate my job LOL. I am currently as of today searching around for another job and I am really having a tough time finding one. I guess you have to be lucky with these sort of things

I work at Twisted in the Towne Mall. I got my job here in October of 2007. I filled out an application at the same time that someone else was in the process of quitting, and I was immediately hired. I think I just got lucky, because I had filled out plenty of other applications for other places, and was unsuccessful, but mainly because I was under 16 at the time.

The job market was already tough on teenagers to begin with. A lot of employers are reluctant to hire teenagers in response to the stereotypes placed upon teens. Low work ethics is not desirable. Our nation's recession is not going to help us any. When the economy is bad the government is supposed to give businesses more money to hire. But do they really? I don't think so. Let's be honest, the U.S. is full of some greedy people. Businesses are going to hold onto that money instead of hiring. Thus less job openings. I'm not currently working or looking for work. However, my mom is a store manager. So I know first hand what the employers are looking for. I also know that higher officials in her business have neglected to give her store the money to hire people.

I don't agree with the people that think that kids from higher-income households are not getting jobs because they'd rather do something that can be put on a resume than wasting their time working at some store. I personally dont have a job because I'm not old enough but if I were old enough that wouldn't be my attitude.

I've never had a job, and now that I have read that I'm somewhat nervous. When I do go looking for a job, will I be able to find one? Is the job situation going to get any better? Any worse? it's hard to tell. But it is understandable that many people are losing their jobs and searching for other jobs that tend to be less paying. And which would you rather hire, a teenager with very little job experience, or an adult? Not only that, but most teenagers don't have vehicles to get to their workplaces. I just hope that I'll have more luck at finding a job than others.

i havent seen any job openings near my home. and with me not having a car a job out of walking distance is out of the question. this could cause a major problem for me if i apply for a job out of walking distance.

This article really shows a lot of truth in it. I have found it really hard to find a decent job, teenagers are being pushed back and making room for those job oppertunities for others. Teenagers don't often get chosen for jobs anyway, so this is really hard for a lot of kids who really need a job to find one.

Jobs are rough on hiring teenagers i have been looking around for a job and i have applied in alot of differnet places, and I have not been able to find ONE job. My sister applied for the same job and was called around 2 weeks latter. The only difference is that she is 30 (lol). So I think that pretty much explains itself.

I currently have a job at Shaddock's in Middletown. I'm pretty sure the only reason I got the job is because my friend's step dad owns the place and her mom has known me pretty much my whole life. The first thing they said to me when I took and application was 'Only take this if you can work weekends and you have a way here'. Well. I live up the road so that wasn't a problem, and I didn't feel like going somewhere else to find a job. Employers really are looking for kids with transportation, which really does limit who can get hired where. I think that and the fact that kids think they can get by soley on the money their parents bring in are the two huge reasons why kids aren't getting hired anywhere.

This article was interesting because it affects me. I quit my job last summer and I've been looking for another one since. I've applied to many places, but so far no luck.

Being so stressed out with so many factors during last year's school year, I decided that I was going to take this summer off from everything and just relax. Then I realized, I need a job. I need gas money. So I went looking for a job, Target, and at the vet's office on Grand. Both times, they told me they weren't looking for anybody. Maybe it was because I was not qualified, who knows. So while I currently do not have a job, I'll get one eventually. But for now, I just won't stress out about it.

Ummm? No I dont have a job, and its not that hard for me to find one either. I actually put in a few applications at places that were hiring. When people say that its getting hard to find a job or even get hired it sometimes scares us teenagers because it makes us feel like we cant get a job, even though that is not always our attitude. But there is no need to stress about it, I will get one eventually.

I have always been to busy to get a job, but about 5 months ago I went job searching. The first job I applied for was a success. Good timing... maybe or was it that I get paid less than minimum wage and no one else would except the job? Anyways, now that I have a job I'm always complaining to my parents that I don't get paid enough. So I get stressed out about not being able to find another one. Anyone hiring??

Lena said...

Finding a job was fairly easy for me this summer. The only thing I had to do was decide where I wanted to work. I had an offer at a store my family owns, but I wasn't quite sure if that was where I wanted to work. I looked at target and a bank, but I gave into the easiest one. I do enjoy my job and it helps me feel more independent from my parents.

Early this summer I was struggling to find a job...but pickers cant be choosers. A job is a job take it if it is within your grasp. I tried getting a job at several different places and they did not hire me but eventually after trying I found a job that gave me great benefits and decent hours.

Even though I currently do not have a job, I have learned through family and friends that finding a job that suits your status is hard to come by. I am still wating to obtain my driver's license, which is when my parents will allow me to get a job. Hopefully when I am ready to apply for a job, the need for employees will be higher.

I disagree with Claire Tolson when she says that getting a job isn't really that hard. I think it's extremely hard to get one. It was probably easier for her because her friend's parents knew the owner of the restaurant.

I almost had a job this summer because my parents' life insurance guy didn't want to work with his boss's nephew. I guess I was just in the right place at the right time, but sadly I would have to do a lot of driving and I don't have my liscence or a car :(

I don't have a job, nor am I looking for one, but from what my friend's have told me, it's really hard to get jobs that are in town. Some stores up at the Dayton Mall are hiring, but that's a good 20 minute drive and some people don't have the car/license or the money to do that every other day or so. Plus for me, being born in the summer, if I chose to get a job this summer I would've had to wait a little while until I turned 16. Even though some places hire at 15 and a half like Whitney said, they like to hire more experienced people.

Dylan said...

I started my job search when I turned 16 and at first found it very frustrating. But after a while the calls started coming in and before I knew it I was working two jobs all summer. I don't think it's hard to find a job as long as your open to a wide variety of work and aren't too picky.

It seems like many teens got lucky finding a job before summer began. As there are more and more people being unemployed, it becomes a competition on who will get the next available job...the experienced adult or the teen still in school? As stated in the article, teens involved in so many activities and soon school will less likely get the job. I have heard from many managers saying that, if they are to hire a teenager that the teen must stay with the job during the school year and not be involved in a lot of activities. Thats why its always good to work for your parents or other relatives because you know they will always have a job for you!

This article is so right. It is hard for teens to get jobs. Especially when there are adults who have families that they need to support that need jobs. When people are hiring they will usually pick an adult over a teenager. But what I dont think people understand is that teenagers really need good jobs too. Because the economy is suffering and there are less jobs to offer and more people are getting cut, I think that a lot of teenagers will be jobless for a while.

I just turned sixteen this summer, so it was the first summer I have actually been able to find jobs. I actually found two jobs, but I had outside connections that helped me to be hired.

If it were up to me, I would not have a job. It takes up too much of my time that I would rather be spending doing more irresponsible things. Unfortunately, I live in a single-parent household and money doesn't exactly grow in trees. But, I am very grateful for the extra money I have. So, the job shortage for teenagers hasn't effected me this summer.

No...I dont have a job right now. Haven't had one since last summer. I'm not really looking for one though. But I put in an application at Steak n Shake but right now they said their on a "hiring freeze." Whatever that means.

I don't have a job right now but i want to look for one soon. I don't think there's any problems for us to get jobs right now, besides of the ages. I think the ages is a problem because there is not many jobs who wil hire someone 15 or 16 before they would hire someone older and with more job experience.

ZackF said...

I think the job market is not just tough on teenagers but also tough on adults. For there to be an opening there usally has to be a person quitting their job or someone getting fired. There are not that many new places that open up anymore so you have to look for places already established. It is pretty much luck of the draw when you get a job it all depends on time. My suggestion: mow grass. It always grows in the summer.

I don't have a job at the moment and haven't been looking so I don't have any first hand experience with this. If the job market isn't that great in general and not just for teenagers, then it makes sense that teenagers would end up having a tougher time with adults being picked over teens.

I currently can't have a job because it will be too much time to foucus on school, football, and have a job all in the same day. Some of my friends do all three of those but i could'nt handle the pressure of al those at once. But I plan to get one after football. But it will be hard because some places don't hire around here so I will have to go out of town to work.

I believe that it is somewhat hard to find a job at this age, but at the same time not because in my case EL RANCHO needed a host and I was the one who walked in and got an application pretty much hired on the spot. Lucky for me. But before that i had searched 3 other places and nothing was hiring or they just rejected me haha.

I am a little late on this one but I havent had trouble finding a job. I have had the same job for the past three years now as a lifeguard. Though for other teenagers it seems to be getting harder. Highschoolers are just going to have to look in the odd spots for jobs instead of restuarants.

Many teenagers are looking forward for jobs every summer but according to the article, this summer, it would be really tough for them to find a job. That would really affect many teenagers especially those who really need money for college.
