Do You Work? How Are Your Grades?

Some say that jobs can improve grades. Do you agree? A new study suggests that’s not a coincidence. According to research from the University of Minnesota, students who worked part time – 20 hours or less a week – actually did better in school than kids who didn’t work at all!

The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that 80% of high school students will hold a job at some point before graduation. Most teens are working for spending money; few are contributing to family expenses.

Are you currently working? Have you held a job before? Would you recommend working while in high school? What do you see as the advantages of working? What are the disadvantages? Has your grades improved while working? Did your grades drop due to working?

I work about 24-30 hours a week. I think that having a job while you are in high school is a great thing to do as long as you aren't working way to many hours. I know that when I work 30 hours a week, it is a little tough to get my homework and other stuff done. I am also involved in a lot of things after school that I want to have time for. I don't think that working has really had an impact on my grades.

I work about 21 hours a week. I have straight As. Having a job in high school is a good thing because it encourages you to do your homework before you go to work as you may be tired after work and cant do it then. When i have to work i do my homework as soon as i get home so i can ensure it gets done and that i have time to do other stuff before i go to work.

I think that as long as you dont work too many hours you will be fine. you just have to make sure you have a time to do your homework. I dont work and I never worked in my life.I believe that even if I had a job, it would not have any significant effect on my grades, but its not the same for everyone.because not everyone is as smart as I am. ha ha...

well.... its always nice to have your own money without terrorizing your parents.

I work about 10 to 12 hours a week. Work has not effected my grades at all. I have always had straight A's and I continued to have A's even after I started working. You just have to manage your time so you can get your homework done. I think having a job in highschool is a good idea because you get to have your own spending money. As long as you dont work too many hours, it should not effect your school work.

I usually work anywhere between 20 and 30 hours between paychecks (during school). I have straight A's, or at least i will by the time grades come out. I work i lot more hours in the summer, but my grades still stay high.

It is great to read that some of you are able to work and maintain high grades. Recent Department of Education surveys show that half of all sophomores, two-thirds of all juniors and nearly three-fourths of all seniors hold jobs during the school year. Seniors work, on average, 20 hours each week. I was curious and brought up some articles to read and did some more research on how it effects grades......From my research, not all stories are the success that some of you have shared. Just watch the grades and yes, I do understand why some of you choose to work. I have been there myself. I too chose to work in high school. I have to say the lessons I learned were invaluable. I have to ask myself, "how many of you have checking and savings accounts?" Experts tell us that we should save around 20% of our paychecks? Are you? Money management skills are so important in life. I hope each of you will sit down and look at your savings with your jobs. Think about it. Start now with good skills and hopefully it will carry on throughout life.

i work at i cant believe its yogurt about 12 to 14 hours a week. in the winter not many people come in so i am forced to do my work then. so in a way, my work helps me get my schoolwork done. if i would be at home, i would procrastinate until the end of the night. tv would stop me from doing homework. at work, i have noting to do, so i do school work.

people should come visit me when i work. it makes my job less boring.

I work around 10 to 20 hours a week. I think that having a job is a great thing because it is good to feel independent and have your own money and to be able to buy things on your own. Well at least that is how i feel because i appreciate what i buy a little more. By me working my grades are the same. I balance my time very well and i try to get my homework done before i get home from school because i know that once i make it home from work i will not be up to it. I think its a good experience to go to school and work only if you can handle it and it does not affect your grades in a negative way.

I have worked in the past, and will start a job once marching band season is over. I think it is a great idea for most high school students, unless you become overloaded with to much. I really think it helps you work harder in all areas of your life once you are finally making money for something you do. The downside is if you are in after school activities. You really don't have much time then to carry a part-time job.

i don't work but i would like to work.i think it does improve their grades because they feel a since of responsibility so they start to take responsibility for everything else they do.
